Jessica LeGare’s current research explores the conditions and effects of literary and journalistic censorship in occupied Japan and Okinawa, particularly the collaborations between writers and censors to guide the effects of prohibitions on published outputs. In accounting for the divergent spaces of publishing and proscription across the mainland and Okinawa, she hopes to reexamine the prevailing themes attributed to writing about Okinawa, from both within and beyond the island. Outside of her research, she enjoys horror films, visiting art exhibitions, sketching/drawing, and reading about mythology and folklore.
