Refuse: Toward a Sucialogy of Culture

Professor Vargas will be presenting on “Refuse” a chapter-in-progress from her current manuscript titled “Sucialogy.” The chapter focuses on a photographic series titled “Sad Fuks” created by Latinx queer performance artist Xandra Ibarra to address structural displacement.

Deb Vargas is Associate Professor and Henry Rutgers Term Chair in Comparative Sexuality, Gender, and Race in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Rutgers University. Vargas is the author of Dissonant Divas in Chicana Music: The Limits of La Onda and co-editor with Nancy Raquel Mirabal and Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes of Keywords in Latina/o Studies (NYU Press). Currently, Vargas is a member of The Institute for Advanced Study, School of Social Science. Vargas’s research draws from queer of color critique, critical race feminism, Chicana/Latina feminist studies, and borderlands theory to pose questions related to cultural productions and working-class aesthetics.
